BENEFITS AND IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC AND DANCE

Dhyan is Eight Times QUOTE

Music (including dance) benefits everybody, in general, and every student, in particular, Some of its benefits are:

Music education greatly helps in Academic Studies: Music develops abstract reasoning necessary for academic success and mathematics and science. Music improves the ability of higher-level thinking. Music and dance increase intelligence.

Music does so, firstly, by optimal and harmonious development of entire brain (Left and Right brain). Furthermore, certain areas of brain which are developed by musical training are also related to learning of academic subjects. For example, rhythm sense is related to spatial-temporal understanding which is essential for maths.

Music education also ensures Success in Life: Practicing music develops qualities of teamwork, communication skills, self-discipline, confidence, and creativity. These are very much required in life and workplace. Participation in music enhances a student’s creativeness. Musical improvisation can teach us improvisation in life also. Music also teaches us discipline, determination and confidence so valuable in life.

Music education gives us Happiness: Music and Dance can transport their practitioners and audience to a state of bliss akin to Union with God or Nirvana. Music is a life-long pleasure and can give one happiness even when one is going through hard times. It is one gift of happiness which every child deserves and every parent must give to children.

Music gives Team Spirit and Leadership Skill: In an orchestra or group dance everybody is expected to play one’s part to the best of one’s capability. It, therefore, gives team spirit and team responsibility which are very essential for life. Group participation in music and dance develop leadership skills. One can gain confidence in leadership skills through conducting an orchestra or choreographing a dance.

Participation in music also boasts social benefits for students: Music and dance are social activities and they, therefore, enhance social values and have great social benefits. Music and dance create friendship and togetherness. It is found that students who participated in an orchestra or group dance have lowest rates of alcohol and drug related problems throughout their life.

Music is a great Stress Buster: Music is the greatest stress buster. When one is playing music or dancing he or she is in a state of pure happiness. On the other hand, when one is stressed music and dance can immediately remove the stress. This is especially useful to get rid of study or examination stress. One should, therefore, never discontinue the practice of music on account of academic pressure or stress of examination.

Music and Dance have great Health Benefits: Dance has great health benefits. Dance builds endurance and stamina, releases toxins through sweating, may lower blood pressure and improve cholesterol levels and reduce heart rate and also help in weight loss. Dance is better than Gym Exercise because:

  • i. Gym exercises and other physical fitness routines are monotonous and, therefore, boring. They are like playing football without a ball! While dance moves are interesting and creative.
  • ii. Dance gives happiness, reduces stress and teaches us a new art of living.
  • iii. Dance routines help build strong and flexible muscles with graceful body and movements. In fact, some forms of dance, like Zumba, burn more calories than Gym routines.
  • iv. Dance is a great way of socializing. It gives feeling of brotherhood/sisterhood. In dance one has to synchronize with other participants and it thus gives understanding of each other. Some dances like Waltz and Tango are great for socializing.
  • v. While Gym routines build specific body parts, dance is good for the whole body.

The time students spend in studying music does not hinder, but increase, their academic success. Thus, contrary to what many parents think, having children learn music does not impair their childrens academic performance, but enhances it and, in addition, teaches them life-long skills and values. Of course, the same benefits can be had by adults by learning music and dance.
